A garbage disposal that won't turn on is either not getting power or has tripped its own internal breaker. Start with the reset button, the small red or black button on the bottom of the unit under the sink, and push it in firmly. If the disposal was recently overloaded or jammed, the reset trips to protect the motor, and pushing it back in restores power. Garbage Disposal Humming or Jammed: How We Free the Flywheel
A disposal that hums when you flip the switch but doesn't spin is jammed, not dead. The motor is getting power, but something is wedged between the impellers and the grind ring, and the flywheel can't turn. Bones, fruit pits, fibrous scraps like celery and artichoke, or a stray utensil are the usual culprits. Turn the disposal off before you do anything else, because leaving it humming burns out the motor for real.
The fix is to free the flywheel. Here's how we clear a jam, and how you can too:
1. Cut the power. Switch the disposal off and unplug it or flip the breaker. Never put your hand in a disposal that has power to it. 2. Turn the flywheel by hand. Insert the hex wrench that came with the unit into the socket on the bottom center and work it back and forth until it spins freely. No wrench? A short broom handle from inside the sink against the impeller works to rock it loose. 3. Clear the obstruction. With power still off, use tongs or pliers, never your fingers, to remove whatever was stuck. 4. Hit the reset. Push the reset button on the bottom, restore power, and run cold water while you test it.

Garbage Disposal Leaking: Top, Side, or Bottom Tells the Story
Water in the cabinet under the sink almost always means the disposal is leaking, and where it's leaking from tells us whether it's a seal repair or a replacement. A leak from the top, where the disposal meets the sink flange, is usually a failed plumber's putty seal or a loose mounting ring, and that's a repair. A leak from the side, at the dishwasher inlet or the drain elbow, is a gasket or a connection that needs to be reseated. Not every disposal problem needs a service call, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a visit. If your disposal hums and you've got the hex wrench that came with it, freeing the flywheel and hitting the reset is a genuine DIY fix, and the steps are right above. 03 My garbage disposal is humming but not spinning. What's wrong?
